Common questions
What are the settings for standard 38° crown on a square corner?
Cutting flat: miter 31.6°, bevel 33.9° — the numbers etched on many saws' tables. For 45° crown it's miter 35.3°, bevel 30°. This calculator computes them for any spring angle and any corner, including out-of-square walls.
Flat or nested — which method should I use?
Nested (crown held against the fence at its spring angle) needs only a single miter cut — simplest if your saw's fence is tall enough. Flat needs the compound settings but handles wide crown that won't stand nested.
What's different on a single-bevel saw?
The angles are identical — but a single-bevel saw only tilts one way, so the opposite-hand cut requires flipping the workpiece end-for-end. The calculator's hint spells out the sequence so the flip isn't guessed.
